Batavia - Paul C. Sherwood, 89, of Batavia, retired firefighter for the City Of Batavia Fire Department after 32 years, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Sherwood was born January 22, 1929 in Batavia, a son of the late William Sherwood and Edna Lapp Sherwood. A graduate of Batavia High School, Paul led the Blue Devils in touchdowns in 1946 and was elected to the Batavia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. He proudly served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. While he was stationed he played football and baseball for the United States Air Force GA. He was the equipment driver for the original St. Joe's Drum Corp and for 55 years he was part of the "chain-gang" for the Batavia Blue Devils Football Team. Paul also served as the Postmaster for the VFW in Batavia. An avid Notre Dame High School and Notre Dame University fan, he loved the New York Yankees, New York Giants and all things Irish. A longtime member of St. Joseph's Church, he was an usher for the church for many years. He was proud of the fact that he was able to attend his grandchildren's many sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Carol A. Ellis Sherwood, whom he married September 19, 1959; his children, Dawn (Rex) Norton and Maureen Sherwood, both of Batavia and Dennis Sherwood of Las Vegas, Nevada; eight grandchildren, Nicholas (Jyssica) Sherwood of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nolan and Whalen Sherwood of Las Vegas, Nevada, Lucy (Josh Maier) Norton of Buffalo, Riley Norton of Erie, Pennsylvania, Shea Norton of Batavia, Trevor and Jaden Sherwood of Batavia; his great-grandson, Cash Paul Sherwood of Las Vegas, Nevada; his twin sister, Pauline Sherwood of Webster and several nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late Jack, William and Robert Sherwood and Rosemary Nixon. There are no prior visiting hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph's School, 2 Summit Street, Batavia, New York 14020, Notre Dame High School, 73 Union Street, Batavia, New York 14020 or in the form of Mass Intentions.
