Batavia - Albert Polk, 86, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Highland Hospital, in Rochester.
Albert was born May 16, 1928 in Glade Spring, Virginia, second eldest son of the late Ballard and Ardean Vannoy Polk, Sr.
Albert obtained his elementary education from Glade Spring Colored School and graduated from Kings Mountain Colored Training School in Abingdon, Virginia. Albert accepted Christ at an early age uniting with Plum Creek Baptist Church.
Albert's military service in 1950 was at Camp Polk, Louisiana for basic training. He was assigned to Germany on the General S.D. Sturgess. Albert served in the Korean War for two years. On November 6, 1952, Albert was discharged from Fort George Mead in Maryland.
Albert married the late Peggy Jean Smith by Reverend Hardy in 1953. They moved to Oakfield in 1955 where Albert was employed by the U.S. Gypsum Company in Oakfield. In 1960, Albert and Peggy purchased the family home in Batavia. Albert retired from U.S. Gypsum Company in 1990 after 34 years of service.
His wife of 53 years, Peggy Jean Smith Polk, passed away on April 4, 2006.
Albert is survived by one son, Albert Wayne Polk of Batavia; five daughters, Janet Lynn Dawson, Freda Ledora Polk, Evangelist Wanda Dorothea Polk, Ivy Polk-Taylor and Brenda Marie Polk, all of Batavia. He also leaves to cherish his memory of the following grandchildren; Jessica Lynn, Peggy Lee, Leona Jean and Quella Sylvia Marie Polk, Roy Lee, Timothy Edison and Derek James Taylor; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Justine and Michael Frederick McKenzie, Quentin Russell Polk and Perry Lee Kenneth Taylor; his son-in-law, Wayne Andrew Burriss of Silver Springs, Maryland; his sister, Georgia Polk of Glade Spring, Virginia; his sister, Evelyn Polk of Chilhowie, Virginia along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Albert was predeceased by his two daughters, Sylvia Jean Polk-Burriss and Sheila Ann Polk. He was the brother of the late Ballard Polk, Jr. and Ellis (Doris) Polk.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 516 Ellicott Street, Batavia, where services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
