Dorothy Grant

d. February 15, 2014

Dorothy L. Grant of Batavia passed away Saturday (February 15, 2014) at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 24, 1922, the daughter of the late Karl and Erna Lange of Seneca Avenue. She was predeceased by her brothers, Edward Lange and Herman Lange.

Dorothy graduated from Batavia High School, vice-president of her class in 1940. She then attended Bryant & Stratton until she went to work for the Frank A. Lown Insurance Agency. Following several years there, she decided to go to New York City to study fashion merchandising. A year later she became a secretary at the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency.

During that period in New York, she met her future husband Phil Grant, who was then a Merchant Marine Officer. They married on July 5, 1947 at the old Methodist church in Batavia. Dorothy was the mother of four children, Michael J. Grant and Marilyn Mael, both of Batavia, Marcia (Byron) Harrington of Norwich, NY and Mitchell J. (Therese) Grant of San Diego, CA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Following her employment as executive secretary to the superintendent of schools in Batavia for 15 years, she accompanied her husband, Phil to Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria. After a two and a half year stay, setting up a large manufacturing facility for G.T.E., they retired to Florida on January 1, 1980.

During her younger years, Dorothy sang in many groups, including the Methodist Church choir and also performed in several Rotary Club shows, including Oklahoma and South Pacific.

Dorothy was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. Through thick and thin she never complained and took great care of her family throughout her 66 years of married life. She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

There will be a memorial service at the H.E. Turner Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday March 8th.
