Eli Kauffman, 90, of Batavia, died Tuesday (June 24, 2014) at his home in Batavia.



Eli was born January 12, 1924 in Gordonville, PA, a son of the late Daniel and Mary (Smoker) Kauffman.



In 1970, Eli and his family moved to Castile, where he became an adult student at Elohim Bible Institute. Prior to enrolling at Elohim Bible Institute, Eli was a dairy farmer. He would later become the dean and a teacher at the school.



From 1973 to 1977, he participated in the Southern Sudan Mission Relief Program. Eli was a courier for the Bank of Castile and also delivered for Beverly's Flowers in Batavia. A member of Grace Baptist Church in Batavia, Eli loved reading, studying and gardening and also enjoyed cross country skiing, cycling, swimming and politics.



Survivors include his wife, Donna (Seekins) Kauffman of Batavia; children, Edward Kauffman of Savannah, GA, Elsie (Michael) Lyth of England, William (Ruth) Kauffman of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Waneta (William) Weiss of Castile and Chuck (Laura) Kauffman of Viroqua, WI; step-children, Garnet (Denise) Wood of Buffalo, Margaret (Robert) Smith of Mooresville, NC, Drew Wood of Phoenix, AZ and William (Diane) Wood of Springville; one sister, Miriam Umble of Pennsylvania; twenty-seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.



He is predeceased by his first wife, Susie (Petersheim) Kauffman, who died in 1999. Eli is the brother of the late Paul Kauffman and Ammon Kauffman.



Calling hours are Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the conclusion of calling hours also at Grace Baptist Church. Burial will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Middle Reservation Cemetery in Castile.
