Eugene B. Zambarda, Sr., 95, World War II Army veteran, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016 in the Veterans Medical Center, Buffalo, New York. Most recently he was a resident of Bristol Village, Clarence Center, New York and former 35- year resident of Bergen, New York.

He was born in Calavino, Italy on January 19, 1921, the son of the late Beniamino and Augusta Pisoni Zambarda. He was raised in Moon Run, Pennsylvania and Manhattan, New York.

He served in the US Army 1st Infantry Division from 1939 to 1945, where he was wounded in the Battle of El Guettar in North Africa, after which he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and Purple Heart.

He married Alice E. Day in 1946 in New York City, where they resided until his retirement, having had a 30-year career with the U.S. Post Office Department and U.S. Postal Inspection Service as a special investigator. They moved to Bergen in 1977 where his wife of 54 years, Alice, died in 2000. He was a member of St. Brigid’s Church where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, VFW, American Legion, and Bergen Rod & Gun Club.

Mr. Zambarda was an avid hunter and fisherman, gardener, enjoyed photography, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are two sons, Eugene (Judith) Zambarda, Jr. of East Amherst and Mark (Nancy) Zambarda of Staten Island; and two daughters, Augusta (James) Rolfe of Byron, and Brenda (George) Schmidt of Honey Creek, Iowa; six grandchildren: Melissa, Anne, Claire, Mark Jr., Michael and Alex; ten great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Reed, Adam, Luke, Chloe, Madeline, Owen, Sophie, Emmeline and Gabriel.

Friends may call Friday, May 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at H.E. Turner and Co. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Street, Bergen, NY. Services will be at 10 am, Saturday, May 14 at St. Brigid’s R. C. Church, 18 Gibson Street, Bergen NY followed by internment at St. Brigid’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Brigid’s R.C. Church, P.O. Box 219, Bergen, NY 14416 or “VA Western NY – Willow Lodge Hospice” and mailed to VA Western NY Healthcare System, 3495 Bailey Ave., Buffalo, NY 14215.
