Batavia - Mr. George T. Raines, 90, a retired teacher and coach at Batavia Public Schools from 1949 to his retirement in 1984, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Crossroads House, in Batavia.



Mr. Raines was born January 26, 1922 in Rochester, the son of the late Guy M. and Ruby Clark Raines.



He attended Canandaigua Institute and graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1949. While at SUNY Brockport he met his future wife, Marie Emerling and married on August 27, 1949. Mrs. Raines died June 25, 2010. Both he and his wife loved golf and were former members of Stafford Country Club. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, St. Joseph's Church. In 2005, Mr. Raines was inducted into the Batavia Blue Devils Athletic Hall of Fame.



A veteran of World War II he served with the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was a pharmacist's mate stationed in Seattle, Washington.



In addition to his late wife, Marie, he was predeceased by his siblings, Guy M. Raines, Jr., Margaret O'Brien and Virginia Moore.



Survivors include a son, Tim Raines of Marietta, Georgia and a daughter, Maureen (Sal) Palatiere of Spring, Texas. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Benjamin Palatiere and Allison (Daniel) Herrin, nieces and nephews.



There will be no prior visitation. Mass will be at 9:30 AM, Monday, September 17, 2012 at Resurrection Parish St. Joseph Church, 303 E. Main St., Batavia. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM, at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, 6657 Mill St., Boston, NY. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Parkway West, Amherst, NY 14228 or Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021.



Arrangements were completed by the H. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020.
