Harriet Kustas

d. October 4, 2014

Harriet G. Kustas, 91, retired owner of the Palace of Sweets, Gentleman Jim's Restaurant, Short Stop and The Hiding Place, all located in the Batavia City Centre, died Saturday (October 4, 2014) at her home in Batavia.

Mrs. Kustas was born August 11, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Gus and Beatrice (Hanson) Sapharas.

While growing up in Cleveland she attended Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, Nathan Hale Middle School and graduated in 1940 from John Adams High School where she played the violin and the piano. During the Depression she traveled with the school orchestra to California to perform. In Cleveland, after graduation from High School, she worked for Goodyear Aircraft during WWII aiding the war effort in the manufacturing of airplanes.

During her younger days she passed by a Church in Cleveland and heard gospel music being played. As a result of this encounter she became a devout Christian and accepted Christ to be her Savior. She also enjoyed country music and watching movies starring Barbara Stanwyck and John Wayne.

In 1945 she married George J. Kustas, who died in 1988. Together they operated Kustas Restaurant on Main St. in Batavia for many years. The restaurant was a popular choice for high school students who learned to love Mrs. Kustas and often times sought her advice. A hardworker, she never complained and was making and packaging candy up until the summer of 2013.

Survivors include three sons, James G. Kustas of Batavia, Theodore G. (Carol Ann) Kustas of Fairport and Paul G. (Debra) Kustas of Buffalo and one daughter, Vacelia M. (George) Sionakidis of Toronto. She was the grandmother of David P. Kustas, Michael J. Kustas and Deanna J. Kustas and sister of the late Nick and George Sapharas and Carol Zenallis. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia. Services will follow the visitation at 12:00 pm. on Tuesday, also at the church. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.
