Henry L. Bartz

d. June 25, 2017

Henry ("Hank") L. Bartz, 89, of Batavia, passed away on Sunday (June 25th, 2017) at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw from complications of heart disease.
He was born in LeRoy, NY, a son of the late John and Flossie (Harvey) Bartz Sr. On August 21, 1948, he married Jane Brotherton at the First Baptist Church in Batavia. A carpenter most of his life, they lived in the house he built on Bank Street Road (Batavia) until their growing family moved to a small farm in the Town of Bethany in 1959.
Henry was a veteran of the United States Army, having served just after the end of WWII. During the 1950's, he worked for a construction company that built homes in the city of Batavia. In 1960, he was part of a crew that worked on building the Niagara Falls (NY) Power Plant. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union 276, and from 1961 until his retirement in 1987, he worked as a carpenter and then foreman for Werner-Spitz Construction in Rochester, NY. In his spare time, Henry loved to bless his family and friends with his woodworking, carpentry and jack-of-all trades skills.
At one time, "Hank" (as he was affectionately known) and Jane were active in the Batavia Bowling League and in the 1960's & '70's they enjoyed square dancing with the Batavia Twirlers Square Dance Club. In the mid 1960's, Hank, with Jane's help, built a tent camping trailer, and for several years loved camping in it with their family. Hank and Jane's love of travel took them to Israel for 3 weeks in 1983, and for several months during 1991 and 2001, they camped their way across the United States in their 5th Wheel camper.
Henry was a great man of integrity, was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was generous to a fault. He loved to laugh and make others laugh with his notable sense of humor. One of Henry's greatest joys in life was serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For 38 plus years, he and Jane attended Batavia Assembly of God Church, and for many years he was involved in several aspects of the church's renovations. He was very influential in his grandson Jeff's decision to become a Christian Pastor. Henry had such a deep love for his family and will be so sadly missed by them.
Survivors include his children, Steven (Penny) Bartz of Stafford, Duane Bartz of Henrietta, Sharon (Rod) Douglass of Castorland, Timothy (Teresa) Bartz of Corfu, Shawn James of Batavia, and Julie Bartz of Prescott, AZ.; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Bartz of LeRoy and Harvey (Laurie) Bartz of Batavia; one sister, Elizabeth Heale of Bergen; and one sister-in-law, Virginia (Heale) Gayton of Batavia; and many nieces and nephews.
Henry was predeceased by his wife, Jane; a daughter, Vicky Lynn Bartz; a daughter-in-law, Karen Bartz; brothers, William, Albert, Robert, and Francis Bartz, and half-brother, James Heale; sisters, Mabel Bartz, Viola Hale, Bertha Gage, and Julia Wallace.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, July 1st from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine St., Batavia, followed by a 12 p.m. Funeral Service with his grandson, Reverend Jeffrey Bartz officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.
