Irene S. Klosen, 102, a resident of the Genesee County Nursing Home, formerly of Alabama, a telephone operator at NY Telephone Co., in Oakfield, early in her life, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the nursing home in Batavia.
Mrs. Klosen was born October 16, 1910 in Elba, a daughter of the late Albert and Louise (Kregar) Scroger.
She was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She moved to South Alabama when she married in 1932 and maintained her own home until age 97. She served for several years on the Board of Elections and worked at the former Atlas Milk Plant in Elba. She was a past member of the Alabama Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed playing cards with her family. Her true joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Harold L. Klosen, died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Hank) Mudrzynski of Alabama; 2 daughters-in-law, Carol Klosen of Boylston, MA and JoAnn Klosen of Goodview, VA.
She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. She was predeceased by three children, Douglas Klosen, David Klosen and Daniel Klosen, a grandchild, 5 brothers, Louis, Albert, Elwin, Carl and Clarence Scroger and 4 sisters, Edith Seward, Edna McCulloch, Adelle Bartholf and Eleanor Ewald.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Ave., Oakfield. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 or Homecare & Hospice, 550 E. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020 or St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will follow at Reed Cemetery in Oakfield.
