Jane Bonney Mason was an Elba girl born 5/22/1921, the daughter of muck farm manager and talented homemaker, Harry and Erma Bonney. Jane was always climbing a tree or on a horse or persuading neighbor kids to act in her plays in the barn. Her active life continued in Elba High School and Mary Washington College where she rode horses, performed in dances, participated in theater, choir and band. She worked for WBTA Radio as a "Penny Wise" (a radio announcer who gives grocery store prices).
In 1949, she married Max W. Mason, Jr., discovered golf at Stafford County Club, so much so that she was able to win the Women's Championship more than once. Also, birdwatching became a lifelong interest for the couple. Max and Jane were married for 68 years! Jane was a caring and active wife, generous mom and grandmother. She is famous in her family for "Bommy's" chocolate chip cookies and apple pie. She helped care for Max in his last years until his death last September 2016. She loved her birds at the feeders and her Elba onions and potatoes. Jane was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Bonney Stratton and Suzanne Bonney Duguid.
Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne (Suzie) Mason Salo (Glenn P. Salo) from Pittsburgh, Pa and her son, Marc Preston Mason (Lisa Bartlett) from Keuka Lake, NY, her grandsons Marc Edward Salo and Scott Mason Salo from Pittsburgh, Pa, also her nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Stratton (Jim), Beau Stratton (Carol), Holly Dill, John Bertrand (Victoria Bertrand), Alison Bertrand, James Bertrand (Joann Bertrand)and several great nieces and nephews. Many fabulous neighbors, mail retrievers, caregivers and friends from all over will miss her. Jane died peacefully after a stroke. Family and friends said goodbye on April 11, 2017. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. A private family celebration of Jane will be planned in the future.
