Oakfield - John J. Gapa, 82, of Oakfield, passed away Wednesday, (January 21, 2015) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.



Mr. Gapa was born October 26, 1932 in Merriam, KS. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958 and was a member of the Allegany American Legion. He was past Allegany County Commander and Oratorical Chairman; past Cattaraugus County Adjutant and Oratorical Chairman; past Post Commander of Charles Harbel Post #892 in Allegany and Post Legionnaire of the year in 1998.



John was a retired lab technician at Henkle-Lucite Corp. (formerly Hysol). He helped set up the Olean industrial slow pitch soft ball league and was a manager of the Hysol softball team.



He is the husband of the late Theresa Ann (Alaimo) Gapa who died 1984.



John is survived by his children, Susan (Kevin) Bradt of Oakfield, Glen (Sandra) Gapa of Lyndonville, Philip Gapa of Bolivar, Thomas Gapa of Olean, and Marcella (Ronald) Price of Kannapolis, NC; three sisters, Mary Morris of Maple Valley, WA, Anne (John) Bustard of Edmonds, WA, Abbey Spencer of Olathe, KS. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

He is preceded in death by five siblings.



Friends may call on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, where John's Funeral Service will immediately follow calling hours on Saturday at 11 a.m. Fr. James Kirkpatrick, Jr., officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.



Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery, Bolivar.
