Elba - Mr. Lawrence T. Bly, 93, of Elba, NY, a maintenance worker at US Postal Service, Batavia, died Friday, March 14, 2014 at New York State Veteran's Home in Batavia.
Mr. Bly was born October 13, 1920 in St. Augustine, TX, the son of the late Charles and Lavania (Anderson) Bly.
He served during WWII war with the US Navy from 1938 to 1944 and was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Quincy (CA-39) at the Battle of Savo Island in 1942. He earned two purple hearts for injuries sustained in conflict.
He attended the Elba First Presbyterian Church, was a farmer in Attica for many years and enjoyed woodworking and his grandchildren.
He was the husband of the late Elizabeth "Betty" Bernhardt Bly who died in 1967 and the late Wilma C. (Brayley) Bly who died in 2011.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Elizabeth M. (Arlis) Bly of Livingston, KY, Sharon A. Bly of Naugatuck, CT, Cheryl A. (Allan) Totten and Mary Lou (Kevin) Andrews, both of Elba; a son, Thomas L. (Sally) Coughlin of Pavilion; a brother: Earl (Wanda) Bly of San Antonio, TX; 9 grandchildren 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Lawrence D. Bly and brother of the late Charles Bly, Marshall Bly, Lloyd Bly, Estelle Pike, Lorraine Lantz and Edith McDaniel.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Attica. Memorials may be made to Salvation Army, 529 E. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020. Arrangements were entrusted to H.E. Turner & Co., Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia.
