Oakfield - Miss Nellie A. Panek, 89, of Oakfield, an inspector for the New York State Department of Health in Buffalo, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at her home under the care of her loving family and HomeCare & Hospice.
Miss Panek was born July 3, 1924 in Albion, a daughter of the late Albert and Anna Polak Panek.
A graduate of the Deaconess School of Nursing in Buffalo, she graduated from the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and from Boston University with her Master's degree in Nursing.
She was a nurse at the former Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo before joining the United States Army, where she was a nurse during the Korean Conflict. Nellie remained with the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel.
She enjoyed golf, archery, horseback riding and traveled the world extensively.
Survivors include her brother, John (late Barbara) Panek of Albion; three sisters, Dorothy (late Bernard) Allen of Elba, Dr. Susan (late Jack) Coffey of Albany and Florence (Richard) Rodon of Oakfield; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She is the sister of the late Albert, Frank, Anna Gloria and Josephine Panek, Mary Sumeriski and Julia Gabriel.
There are no prior visiting hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Padre Pio Parish - Our Lady of Fatima Worship Site, 65 South Main Street, Elba. Burial will be held in St. Cecilia's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Elba Fire Department, P.O.
