Obituary of Robert Thompson
Elba - Robert "Bob" Thompson, 93, of Elba, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, June 28, 2020.
Robert was born in Batavia January 4, 1927. The son of the late Glenn and Zelda Heywood Thompson, he was raised by his aunt, Carrie Deagman.
As a member of the United States Army, Mr. Thompson proudly served his country during World War II. After his return to Western NY, he owned and operated the IGA grocery store in the Village of Oakfield, partially restored the East Shelby Methodist Church, and developed the former Oakfield High School into the Schoolhouse Manor. A lifetime VFW member, he enjoyed collecting tools, spending time in his workshop, and being with his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Madeline Waterman Thompson, who passed away in 1962, and his sisters, Ruth Johnson and Martha Thompson.
Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Calus Thompson. Also surviving are his children: Dianne (Keith) Boeheim of Batavia, Alan R. Thompson of Montana, Michael Robert (Anne-Marie Yunker) Thompson of Chesterland, Ohio, Katrina Marie (Labros) Petropoulos of Chardon, Ohio, and Melissa Marie Thompson of Macon, Georgia; seven grandchildren: Kathrine, Matthew, Elizabeth, Liam, Spiridon, Anastasia, and Aidan; three great-grandchildren; his brother, Clifford (late Arlene) Thompson of Bergen; his brother-in-law; John (Linda) Calus of Missouri; along with many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thompson's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the VA in Batavia and the VNA of WNY for the compassionate care they provided Robert during his time of greatest need.
The family will be holding private services, with military honors. There will be no visitation. He will be laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
