Rosemary Griffin Surowka, 85, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. For most of her adult life, she lived in Batavia, New York, most recently at The Manor House.



Born in Albany on February 17, 1930, she was raised in Clinton, New York, the daughter of the late F. Stanley Griffin and Genevieve Shea Griffin.



Rosemary graduated from Northwestern University and received her Masters from Columbia Teachers College. She taught reading in Batavia Schools for over 30 years and was the President of the Richmond Memorial Library Board for many years. She loved walking, reading, enjoyed dancing, playing bridge and traveling. More than anything, she loved spending time having fun and laughing with her friends and family.



Rosemary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Theodore A. Surowka who passed away on December 5, 2001; her son, Michael G. Surowka who passed away on December 15, 2013 and her brother, F. Stanley Griffin, Jr.



She is survived by her children, Shaun A. Surowka of Batavia, Maura (Peter) Morgante of Jamestown, Griff (Cathy) of Richmond, Virginia and Margaret Surowka-Rossi of Cambridge; her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored, Patrick Morgante, Molly Morgante, John Morgante. all of Jamestown, and Genevieve Rossi and Tre Rossi of Cambridge; her sister, Joanne Shippey of Akron, Ohio; her brother, Dr. John Griffin of Atlanta, Georgia; many beloved nieces and nephews, and many very dear friends.



The family would like to thank the staff of The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls for their compassionate care of Rosemary in her final months.



Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. She will be interred at Grand View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Rosemary may make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association.
