Batavia - Mrs. Ruth M. Callan Newell, 100, of Batavia, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.



She was born September 7, 1913 in Elba, a daughter of the late Frank and Hazel Lewis Hackett.



A member of St. Mary's Church, her family, especially time with her grandchildren, and her home were the most important parts of her life. The second oldest of 13 children, at the age of 16, she served as the personal maid to Mae Rowell, wife of E.N. Rowell who was owner of E.N. Rowell Box Factory in Batavia. During World War II, she worked at the Doehler-Jarvis factory in Batavia on the bomb line.



Her family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and thanks to the staff of the Genesee County Nursing Home, especially to the nurses and aides on 4th floor who gave their mother loving care while she was a resident for the past four years.



She is predeceased by her husbands, Raymond N. Callan in1981 and Frank O. Newell in 2006.



She is survived by her children, Donald (Barbara) Callan of Batavia, Richard (Helen) Callan of Walworth, Ann (Joseph) Sherwood Brunett of Rochester, Charles (Janet) Callan of Fredonia, Bonnie (Philip) Coburn of Batavia and Patricia (Vincent) Shanley of Rochester; her step-daughter, Nancy Newell Spilove of Florida; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, step-grand and step-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Myra Kerner of Largo, Florida, Francis (Lee) Hackett of Florida, David (Jo) Hackett of Rochester and Joanne Giambrone of Florida and several nieces and nephews.



There are no prior visiting hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
