Basom - Wayne Phelps, 101, of Basom, passed away Tuesday, (October 2, 2018) at his home, in Basom.
Mr. Phelps was born December 17, 1916 in Pembroke, a son of the late Dennis J. and Mary (Klotzbach) Phelps.
Wayne was a 1934 graduate of the Oakfield-Alabama School and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2007. He was a member of the Indian Falls United Methodist Church, the New York Farm Bureau, as well as the East Pembroke Grange #1157, the New York State Grange, and the National Grange.
He served on the Alabama Town Board for 20 years. During those years, he spent 12 as the Town Justice and 8 as Town Supervisor.
He has been a farmer in Basom for several decades, operating the Wayne E. Phelps Enterprises, Inc. and has been an Agway Agent Buyer since 1966.
He is survived by his wife, Myra (Rudolph) Phelps, whom he married November 12, 1947; a son, Dennis F. (Joan) Phelps of Basom; a daughter: MaryJo Hinkson of Basom; Daughter-in-law, Dana Phelps of Corfu. 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive.
Wayne is preceded in death by a son, Bryan Phelps in 2011 along with his siblings, Revere (late Arlie), Maurice (late Beth), Virgil (late Louise) Phelps, and Esther (late Warren) Schaal.
Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Indian Falls United Methodist Church, 7908 Allegany Road, Corfu. Wayne's Funeral Service will immediately follow calling on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials in Wayne's memory may be made to Indian Falls United Methodist Church, 7908 Allegany Road, Corfu, NY 14036 or Homecare & Hospice, 29 Liberty Street, Suite #6, Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu. Arrangements were entrusted to the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, Oakfield.
